When Should You Book Your Newborn Session? Why the Second Trimester Is the Perfect Time!
If you’re expecting a new baby, you’ve probably already started thinking about the nursery, baby names, your registry, and all of the little details that come with welcoming your newest family member.
But there’s one thing you may not realize you should plan before your baby arrives: your newborn photography session.

As a newborn photographer serving New Braunfels, Texas, and the San Antonio, Texas area, one of the questions I hear most often is:
“When should I book my newborn photos?”
My answer is simple: the second trimester is the perfect time to book your newborn photography session.
Why Should You Book Your Newborn Session So Early?
It may seem early to think about newborn pictures when you still have months before meeting your baby, but booking during pregnancy can make the entire experience much easier.
Newborn photographers often limit the number of newborn sessions they accept each month. This allows plenty of flexibility around each baby’s arrival and ensures that every family receives a relaxed, personalized experience.
By reserving your session during your second trimester, you have a much better chance of getting on the photographer’s calendar around your baby’s due date.
And the best part?
You don’t need to know exactly when your baby will be born.
Your due date is simply used to reserve a spot on the calendar. Once your new baby arrives, we can choose the perfect session date based on baby’s actual birth date.
Why the Second Trimester Is the Sweet Spot
The second trimester is often the perfect time to start planning your newborn photography session.
You’re far enough along that your pregnancy feels real and you’re beginning to prepare for your baby, but you’re hopefully not yet in those final weeks when everything starts feeling a little more hectic.
Booking during your second trimester gives you time to:
- Choose your newborn photographer
- Look through newborn photography galleries
- Decide what style of images you love
- Plan sibling and family photographs
- Ask questions about the session
- Reserve your baby’s spot on the calendar
- Relax knowing one more important thing is checked off your list
Once your baby arrives, you’ll have plenty to think about. Feeding, diaper changes, visitors, recovery, and those endless newborn snuggles quickly take over your days.
Having your newborn session already planned means you don’t have to worry about finding a photographer while you’re running on very little sleep.
When Should Newborn Photos Actually Be Taken?
Booking your session and taking your photos are two different things.
While I recommend booking your newborn photography session during your second trimester, the actual session typically takes place during your baby’s first few weeks of life.
This is when babies are still in that incredibly tiny newborn stage. They tend to be sleepy, naturally curled up, and wonderfully snuggly.
Every baby is different, though, and there is no magic expiration date on newborn photography. If your baby is older than expected when your session takes place, we can still create beautiful images that capture exactly who your baby is at that stage.
What If My Baby Comes Early or Late?
This is one of the biggest reasons I recommend booking based on your due date rather than an exact session date.
Babies have their own plans!
Your baby may arrive two weeks early, right on their due date, or decide they need a little extra time.
That’s completely okay.
Once your baby arrives, simply let me know and we’ll work together to schedule your newborn session based on baby’s arrival.
The goal is to make the process as easy and stress-free as possible for you.
Don’t Wait Until After Your Baby Is Born
One of the biggest mistakes parents can make is waiting until after their baby arrives to start looking for a newborn photographer.
By then, your favorite photographer may already be fully booked.
And the newborn stage moves incredibly fast.
Those tiny fingers.
Those little toes.
The sleepy stretches.
The flaky newborn skin.
The tiny rolls.
The way your baby fits perfectly against your chest.
Your baby will change so much during those first few weeks.
Newborn photography allows you to freeze those tiny details in time so you can remember just how small your baby once was.
