Your baby is turning ONE!
Somehow, the tiny newborn you brought home a year ago is now sitting, standing, crawling, laughing, and showing off a personality all their own.
A first birthday is such a meaningful milestone, and a neutral one year cake smash session is a beautiful way to document this fleeting stage without a busy or overly themed setup.
At Nancy Berger Photography, I love keeping first birthday sessions simple, timeless, and focused on your baby.

When Should You Book Your Baby’s First Cake Smash Session?
Your baby’s first birthday will be here before you know it!
Between planning the birthday party, choosing the perfect outfit, ordering the cake, and somehow keeping up with a baby who suddenly wants to be everywhere, it’s easy for first birthday photography to get pushed down the list.
If you’re planning a first birthday cake smash session, you may be wondering:
When should I book my baby’s cake smash photographer?
For families in New Braunfels, San Antonio, and the surrounding areas, I recommend booking your baby’s cake smash session about 4–8 weeks before you would like your session to take place. If you have a specific date, weekend, or busy season in mind, booking earlier is always a good idea.
When Is the Best Time to Photograph a Cake Smash?
Your baby doesn’t have to have their cake smash session on their actual birthday.
In fact, many families choose to schedule their session a few weeks before or after their baby’s first birthday.
This can make planning much easier!
If you’re hoping to use the photographs for:
- First birthday invitations
- Birthday announcements
- Party decorations
- Thank-you cards
- A first birthday photo album
- Prints or artwork for your home
I’d recommend scheduling the session several weeks before the party so you’ll have time to receive your gallery and order any products you need.
How Far in Advance Should You Book?
4–8 Weeks Before Your Desired Session
For many families, this is a great timeframe to reach out.
It gives us time to choose a date, plan your session, and make sure everything is ready for your baby’s big milestone.
2–3 Months Ahead
If your baby’s birthday falls during a particularly busy season, such as fall or the holiday season, I’d recommend reaching out earlier.
This is especially helpful if you have a specific weekend or date in mind.
Even Earlier for a Specific Date
If you absolutely need your session on a particular day, don’t wait until the last minute to inquire.
Photography calendars can fill quickly, and first birthday sessions are often planned around birthday parties, family gatherings, and other celebrations.
The earlier you reserve your date, the more flexibility you’ll have.
When Should Your Baby’s Cake Smash Actually Take Place?
There is no rule saying your baby needs to be exactly 12 months old for their cake smash.
Some families schedule their session shortly before the first birthday, while others wait until their baby is 12–13 months old.
The most important thing is choosing a time when your baby is generally happy, rested, and ready to play.
We’ll work around your baby’s personality and needs rather than expecting them to perform for the camera.
What If My Baby Doesn’t Like the Cake?
Don’t worry!
This is one of the most common questions I hear from parents.
Some babies immediately dig into the frosting.
Others are cautious and need a little time to explore.
Some babies love smashing the cake but don’t actually want to eat it.
And some babies aren’t interested in the cake at all.
Every baby is different.
A cake smash session isn’t about whether your baby eats an entire cake. It’s about capturing this incredibly special stage of their personality.
We’ll photograph the beautiful portraits before the cake comes out, too, so you’ll have plenty of images celebrating your baby’s first birthday regardless of how they feel about the cake.
Planning a Neutral First Birthday Cake Smash
If you’re drawn to a simple, timeless aesthetic, a neutral cake smash is a beautiful choice.
Rather than a heavily themed setup, we can keep the focus on your baby with soft, neutral colors, simple styling, and a beautiful cake.
Neutral photographs are timeless and complement almost any home décor, making them especially beautiful when printed and displayed in your home.
